Delaware drivers may be eligible to complete a defensive driving course for insurance discounts, point credit benefits, court requirements, or other driving-related obligations. Eligible voluntary completion of an approved basic course qualifies for a 10% discount on bodily injury liability, property damage liability and personal injury protection premiums—not the entire policy. If only some listed drivers complete the course, the discount is prorated. Eligible refresher completion can qualify for a 15% discount on these coverages. Is your Delaware defensive driving course approved?
Yes. Our Delaware Defensive Driving Program is approved by the Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles. Choose the program that matches your needs; the basic, refresher and Aggressive Driving (BM) programs serve different purposes.

Why should I take a Delaware defensive driving course?
Voluntary completion of an approved course can qualify eligible drivers for an insurance discount and a three-point credit toward future violations in certain circumstances. These benefits have separate requirements. Court-ordered attendance does not qualify as voluntary attendance for the required insurance discount. The point credit does not erase a conviction or subtract existing DMV points.

Can a Delaware defensive driving course reduce my points?
Completing an approved defensive driving course does not remove or reduce points already on your Delaware driving record. A three-point credit may apply to future violations in certain circumstances under DMV rules. It is not an automatic three-point deduction.

Does the course remove my traffic conviction?
No. Completing a defensive driving course does not erase the conviction. Delaware’s defensive driving point credit is a separate benefit that may apply to future violations in certain circumstances.

Can I take the Delaware defensive driving course online?

When does my point credit take effect?
The course provider reports successful completion to Delaware DMV, which states that completion is added to your driving record within 48 hours. Reporting the course does not subtract existing points; DMV applies the credit to qualifying future violations under its rules.

Will defensive driving help me become a safer driver?
That is one of the primary purposes of the course. Defensive driving reviews collision prevention, responsible driving behavior, traffic laws, and techniques for identifying and responding to roadway hazards.

What happens after I finish the course?
After successfully completing the course, follow the instructions provided for your completion certificate or electronic reporting. Keep a copy of your completion documentation for your records.

What information do I need to register?
Most students need basic information such as their name, email address, driver's license information, and any additional information required for the particular course or benefit they are seeking.

How do I know which Delaware course I should take?
Choose the Defensive Driving Program for the basic course. Choose the Defensive Refresher Driving Program if you have completed a qualifying prior course and meet the refresher timing requirements. Choose the Aggressive Driving (BM) Program if your court order requires a behavior-modification/attitudinal driving course following an aggressive-driving conviction. If you have a court order, check its exact course requirement before registering.

When can I take the refresher course?
Delaware DMV lists refresher eligibility as 2½ to 5 years after your initial course. To maintain the insurance discount without a lapse, complete the refresher during the 180 days before your three-year expiration date. If you miss that window, check your eligibility and the new discount start date with your insurer before registering.
