Yes. This online Point and Insurance Reduction Program course is offered through the American Safety Institute. You can verify the sponsor on the New York DMV approved I-PIRP course list. No court permission is required.

How long does the online course take?
New York’s I-PIRP course includes 320 minutes of instruction. You can complete it in several sessions, but you must finish within 30 calendar days after registration.

How much does the course cost?

When will I receive my certificate?
The course sponsor mails your completion certificate within 14 business days. Give the mailed certificate to your insurer; an emailed copy is not accepted for the insurance reduction. The sponsor reports course completion to DMV within 10 weeks. No certificate is sent to a court for this voluntary PIRP benefit.

How often can I take PIRP for its benefits?
You can use PIRP point reduction once in an 18-month period. To keep the insurance premium reduction, take an approved course once every 36 months. These are different benefit periods.

Will PIRP remove my ticket or points from my record?
No. PIRP does not remove a violation, conviction or points from your driving record. If eligible, up to four points are excluded from DMV’s calculation for a possible suspension. The benefit applies to qualifying points from violations within the 18 months before course completion; it is not credit against future violations.

What information do I need to register?
Have your name exactly as it appears on your New York driver license, your DMV ID number, date of birth, contact information and payment details ready. The approved course will explain its identity checks. You do not need a traffic citation or court number for voluntary PIRP enrollment.

How do I receive the insurance discount?
Give your mailed completion certificate to your insurer. The PIRP benefit is a 10% reduction in the base rate of auto or motorcycle liability and collision premiums each year for three years. If you present the certificate within 90 days of completion, the reduction is retroactive to the completion date; later submission may change the effective date.
